Hi everyone,
Wow, what a mad first 24 hours of this book being published. We've
already had a good 2400 unique downloads of the pdf's, someone
converting the document to djVu, a translated press release (dutch) and
quite some interest in working on translations.
Personally I'm quite commited to trying to figure out the best way to
get the book translated to as many languages as viable, whether through
volunteer efforts, or funded projects, and i've spent some time thinking
about the best approach for that.
This mail is an attempt at starting a discussion about the best way to
get that ball rolling as soon as possible.
Here are a couple of thoughts in that direction:
- Do we need a web-based version of the book that's easier to translate?
Not being a translator, i know vey little about what is the best way to
offer something up, that makes it simple for people to translate. If
anyone has ideas for platforms that ease translation, please let us know.
- Do we need a separate mailing-list for translators, or should we keep
that traffic on this site?
- We definitely need a wiki-page to add information about people working
oin different translations (or wanting to work on them), with a
prominent link from the front page or menu. I'll try and collect info
over the next couplke of days,. and get that wiki-page up.
- We have some indication from funders who might be willing to fund
translations, but we really need a budget estimate, a team lead, and
time to write a proposal for each translation. Here's a list of
languages that i would personaly give priority to:
* Arabic
* French
* Spanish
* Russian
* Hindi
Let's see if we can get a discussion rolling on this, including
identifying project leads for translations etc.
cheers
/tomas
