From samuele at isf-pisa.org Thu Aug 16 15:22:10 2007 From: samuele at isf-pisa.org (Samuele Catusian) Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2007 00:22:10 +0200 Subject: [WNDW] WNDW: 2nd Edition In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <20070816222210.GA5513@isf-pisa.org> Hello gals and guys, first of all, I would like to thank this community for the great work you've done and you're still doing. I'm a volunteer of Ingegneria Senza Frontiere, a sort of Italian network like engineering withouth borders; our iniciatives are mainly about science and technology applied to developing scenarios, including the ICTs for development. We focus most of our sensitization activities on the University environment, because we believe essential to form the students' consciousness, which builds the world of tomorrow. Many of us are working on projects involving wireless technologies, and one of them is the BoulSat Project[1]: we installed a VSAT system in a local ONG and a wireless network to provide Internet connectivity to the hospital, the town hall, and the provincial health administration in the town of Boulsa (Namentenga), located in the north of Burkina Faso. These institutions are about 2km apart, and we linked them by means of some home-made cantennas, privileging poor solutions where possible and introducing the local technicians to the use of poor materials for the wireless comunications. The network is working well since the last january and we plan to be back in Boulsa on december, to check the physical condition of the network and evaluate if the choices we made in terms of materials and technologies are appropriate. In the meanwhile, we're working hard to well document and publicize our work. In particular, one of us, Federico Longobardi, dedicated his Laurea Magistrale (master degree) thesis in telecomunication engineering to the characterization and documentation of the cantennas theory, besides the practical realization with poor and waste materials[2]. He worked in the Politecnico di Torino laboratories under the supervision of the Prof. Daniele Trinchero, who has been really helpful with us. In the last months we also organized some cantenna building courses, showing how these technologies can be simply realized and presenting our projects. Currently, we are preparing three (and maybe even more) main public events in the universities of Turin, Pisa and Milan to present the Project, talk about digital divide and appropriate ICTs, and teach how to make antennas from oil and whiskey cans. We found WNDW as a precious source of informations and hints for our works, and now we would be glad to render and share our experience with the community. Unfortunately we are not in time to produce a significant contribution prior to september 1st: I am in Kinshasa (RDC) until the end of the month working in another ISF project, and many of us are currently engaged in other projects and have no time to work on that. But, if our contribution is appreciated, we can start preparing a case-of-study chapter based on our experiences, and hopefully finish it by october. We can also provide a French translation of the chapter, if appreciated. Please let us know if we can be in time to submit our contribution, and feel free to suggest or ask for more information if needed. Bye for now, and thanks again to the entire community. :) Regards. Yes; contact me so > as to discuss modalities. salut carl, one of the sources we use at NSRC to buy various parts for wireless kits is Fab Corp. take a look at these two URLs below and let me know exactly which part(s) you want, and how many, and we can order them in our next round of procurement. if you like, NSRC could send some to you in an upcoming shipment we will be sending to colleagues in Benin. http://www.fab-corp.com/home.php?cat=274 http://www.fab-corp.com/home.php?cat=256 drop me a note to coordinate on the shipping details and local logistics.
